Comprehensive Book Summary: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Jojo Moyes’ Me Before You is a heart-wrenching love story that delves into the emotional rollercoaster of loss, love discovery, self-discovery, and the right to live a life with dignity. The narrative follows the journey of Louisa Clark, an ordinary young woman, and Will Traynor, a one-time adventurer now confined by a chair. Their unique relationship forces them to confront their deepest fears and dreams, leading to an intense emotional growth that teaches them to embrace life despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Part 1. Louisa Clark – A Simple Girl with Simple Dreams

Louisa Clark (Lou) is a 26-year-old woman who lives in a smaller English town with her parents and sister (Treena) as well as her nephew and grandpa. She is employed in The Butter Bun Cafe, in which she is awed by the daily routine of serving customers and engaging with people from the area. Louisa hasn’t been outside her comfort zone, but she is happy with her basic and predictable lifestyle. She’s been with Patrick , a long-time friend who she’s been dating for a few years. However, their relationship lacks passion.

If the café abruptly closes, Louisa is required to find an employment opportunity to provide for her family. With only a few years of experience and a lack of skills, she has to find work until she discovers an unorthodox opportunity, which is the possibility of a 6-month-long agreement to assist an older man. It’s a lucrative job, and even with inexperience, she decides to give the opportunity a shot.

Part 2: Meeting Will Traynor – A Man Who Lost Everything

Louisa quickly discovers her new employer, Will Traynor, who is a successful and once-adventurous businessman who developed quadriplegia due to a motorbike crash. Before his accident, Will was living an active, exciting life– travelling across the globe, participating in extreme sports, and signing high-risk business deals. Since using a wheelchair, he’s changed into angry, bitter and depressed to the core. Louisa, in need of a job to support her family, takes on the challenging role of caring for Will, hoping to make a difference in his life.

Will’s mother, Camilla Traynor, employs Louisa not only to provide care but also to aid in lifting his spirits. But Will instantly snubs the presence of Louisa. He’s unfriendly and sarcastic and is not interested in developing any connection with Louisa. Louisa herself is unkind and ungrateful; however, she is determined to leave.

Despite the initial rough start, Louisa’s quirky personality and tenacity start to make it through Will’s emotional barriers. She is a challenge to Will and inspires him to laugh and gradually becomes a part of his everyday routine. But Lou soon discovers an unsettling secret–Will has made a decision that he wants to die with assisted suicide in an assisted suicide clinic in a Swiss clinic known as Dignitas.

Part 3: A Race Against Time – Changing Will’s Mind

Louisa is stunned and devastated when she discovers Will has provided his parents with six months to live before they go through assisted suicide. Louisa refuses to accept his decision and sets out on a task to make him reconsider his decision.

Determined to prove to Will that life is worthwhile, Louisa plans a series of events for Will. From performances and horse races to going to the beach and lavish dinners, she does everything she can to revive his enthusiasm for life. Will, although he is grateful for her efforts, is steadfast in his choice.

As their bond deepens, Louisa and Will find themselves falling in love. Their relationship becomes a catalyst for personal growth, inspiring Lou to think beyond her small town and encouraging Will to not settle for a mediocre life despite his condition. This transformative power of love is sure to inspire readers.

Despite their growing relationship, Will remains adamant about his decision to choose. He believes that being in a wheelchair, not living at all and that nothing but love and care will change this.

Part 4: The Ultimate Heartbreak – A Love That Wasn’t Enough

In hopes that a trip could make Will reconsider his decision, Louisa takes him to Mauritius, and they spend happy private moments there. Lou admits to her love for Will and begs Will to live a long, happy life for her. But Will gently tells her that his affection for her isn’t enough to inspire him to stay in this manner. Will insists that he would like to go to Dignitas not because he isn’t in love with her but rather because he can’t live the life he imagines for himself.

Louisa finds herself shocked. She is agitated, screams, and refuses to accept her husband’s decision. However, in the final moments, she realizes she is too attached to him to prevent the man from making his decision. She is back for him during his last moments and holds his hand as he goes to sleep, her heart breaking with the weight of his decision.

Part 5: A New Beginning – Will’s Last Gift

After Will’s death, Louisa is in a state of confusion. However, she realizes that Will is the one who left her a note that encourages her to be bold, explore and accept the opportunities that he believes she’s capable of achieving.

The story concludes with Louisa sitting in a Parisian cafe , ready to embrace the life that Will would have wanted for her. Despite her grief, she carries his lessons and love within her , ready to face the world as a stronger, more courageous person. This resilience in the face of loss is a testament to the human spirit and is sure to leave readers feeling hopeful.
